July 2025 Message and Reflections from the NAPE President

As we arrive at the midpoint of the year, I extend warm greetings from the Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE), the foremost professional body for Petroleum Geosciences and related disciplines in Nigeria and across Africa.

In the face of global energy challenges, NAPE remains steadfast in its commitment to leverage our vast human capital and collaborate with relevant stakeholders. Together, we are focused on delivering sustainable solutions to meet the evolving energy needs of the world.

Global Collaboration and Professional Engagements
In June, I represented NAPE at the 86th EAGE Annual Conference in France, where I delivered a presentation on “Growth Opportunities in the Niger Delta” highlighting marginal fields, gas potential, and low-carbon initiatives. I also joined a panel on Ultra-Deepwater Exploration, emphasizing the role of seismic imaging, innovation, and partnerships.

The key takeaway from these sessions is clear: Nigeria remains pivotal to Africa’s energy future.

I also met with global geoscience leaders to strengthen collaboration on human capital development, innovation, and advancing the role of geosciences in the energy transition.

Technical and Business Engagements
Our monthly Technical and Business Meetings continue to deliver high-quality knowledge sharing across our chapters including Lagos, Port Harcourt, Benin, Abuja, and Warri. If you missed any session, I encourage you to catch up on our YouTube channel. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0iYxL2S5yx0WzN0zgrbR4w/streams

Strengthening Industry-Academia Collaboration
Through our University Assistance Program (UAP), we hosted the 2nd edition of our Learning Series for Nigerian university lecturers, with the theme: “From Theory to Treasures: How Geologic Modelling Drives Resource Valuation in the Oil and Gas Industry.” The 3rd edition of the Learning Series will hold on 12th July, focusing on “Industry Best Practices in Pre-Drill and Real-Time Pore Pressure Assessment for Enhanced Drilling Safety and Hydrocarbon Recovery.” Details are available on the NAPE website: www.nape.org.ng

We also recorded strong participation in the NAPE Research Grants, receiving 40 submissions from all six geopolitical zones. Evaluation is underway, and winners will be selected in July.

Advocacy and Strategic Partnerships
In June, I attended the installation of Ms. Rose Ndong as the 33rd President of the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS). In my engagement with NMGS President, we agreed on a shared commitment to deepen collaboration on advocacy and joint programs of mutual benefit.

Also in June, on the World Hydrography Day, I had the honour of chairing a panel session on the theme: Seabed Mapping: Enabling Ocean Action. Discussions highlighted how seabed mapping underpins informed ocean action, sustainability, and the blue economy. During my engagement with chief host, and the Hydrographer of the Federation, Rear Admiral Ayo Olugbode, I gave my support for collaboration between Nigerian Hydrographic Society (NHS) and NAPE.

Upcoming Events
Preparations are in full swing for our flagship events:
* NAPE@50 Celebration – Scheduled for 14th August 2025, this landmark event will set the stage for the next 50 years of energy leadership and innovation.
* NAPE-NMGS Mini-Conference – Holding at KWASU from 28th–30th August 2025.
* Annual International Conference and Exhibition – Coming up from 9th–13th November 2025.

We continue to engage industry leaders and secure sponsorships to ensure the success of these pivotal gatherings.

Our Commitment
NAPE remains deeply committed to making a lasting impact across the energy value chain and the academic landscape. As we advance into the second half of the year, I encourage us all to remain inspired, involved, and intentional in our collective mission.

Warm regards,

Johnbosco Uche, FNAPE
President, Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE)
