Report of the Courtesy Visit & Inauguration of Gombe State University


The first NAPE Students’ Chapter in the Northeast of Nigeria was inaugurated on Thursday, 19th July, 2018 at the Gombe State University, Gombe State by the NAPE President, Dr. Andrew Ejayeriese, fnape, fnmgswho led other NAPE Executives comprising of Dr. Adelola Adesida, Chairman, NAPE University Assistance Program (UAP), Mr. Ehi Bazuaye, Abuja Chapter Coordinator and Lawrence Osuagwu, Head, Technical & Educational Services, NAPE Secretariat to the occasion.
The NAPE team was warmly welcomed and received at the Department of Geology by the Head of Department(HOD), Prof. N. K. Samaila and other lecturers in the department.  The HOD expressed his gratitude and that of the department to the NAPE team for finding time out of their busy schedules to come and inaugurate the Students’ Chapter. In his words “We are most delighted to have you here for this occasion and choosing our University out of the entire Universities in the Northeast for this honour” In his remarks, NAPE President thanked the HOD for the warm reception accorded him and his team. He informed the HOD that his students have merited the visit and inauguration by their frequent participations in NAPE activities. He commended the HOD and the lecturers for their hard work in preparing and supporting the students to attend NAPE programs as recently as the Mini-Conference hosted by Federal University of Petroleum Resources (FUPRE) and Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) in Warri/Effurun.
As part of the programs lined up for the Students’ Chapter inauguration ceremony, the NAPE team was conducted around the facilities of the Department such as the library, laboratories and geological museum.  After the tour of the facilities, NAPE President and the UAP Chairman commended the Department for the facilities they have put in place. Suggestions were given to the HOD on how best to utilize the facilities at their disposal to the benefit of the students and the university at large. The department was encouraged to develop a robust geological fieldwork program where they have comparative advantage especially in the study of the basement complex and sedimentary rocks in Gombe. The HOD also used the occasion to solicit for technical assistance for the department.
Before proceeding to the venue of the inauguration ceremony, NAPE team also had the opportunity to meet with the pioneer Vice Chancellor of Gombe State University, Prof. Abdullahi Mahdi who was credited with laying the foundation and sustaining the beautiful structures and attractive landscapes that dots the entire University. Prof. Mahdi expressed his delight in receiving the team in his modest office. He also commended the NAPE for visiting the university for such a wonderful occasion.

Prelude to the formal inauguration of the Students’ Chapter, NAPE President, Dr. Andrew Ejayeriese delivered a lecture titled “Paradigm Shift from Fossil Fuel-Based Economy:What Hope for Nigeria’s Petroleum Industry”. The lecture which highlighted with verifiable facts and figures the prime place of hydrocarbons has against renewable energy in the lives and activities of humans in the foreseeable future was well received by the audience with a resounding applause.  The HOD who took the podium immediately after the lecture for his opening remarks thanked the President for the illuminating lecture and welcomed him and his team to the department for the inauguration of the NAPE Students’ Chapter.
In his speech at the occasion, the UAP Chairman, Dr. Adelola Adesida congratulated the Department of Geology and the University for meeting up with all the criteria for the inauguration of a students’ chapter. He used the occasion to inform the students of the activities of the University Assistance Program of the association. He urged the students to take advantage of these programs to better their lots.  At the end of his speech he invited the President to formallyinaugurate the Students’ Chapter.
“With the powers conferred on me as the President of NAPE and for the Department and the University having fulfilled all the criteria for a Students’ Chapter, I hereby officially inaugurate the NAPE Students’ Chapter of the Department of Geology, Gombe State University dated this day Thursday, 19thJuly 2018”. With these words by the President, the Students’ Chapter was officially inaugurated. Subsequently, some NAPE publications and take off grant for the Chapter were presented to the HOD. The President also decorated the HOD, lecturers and the Students’ Executive Committee members with the NAPE lapels with a charge for them to be good ambassadors of the association. Other guests who graced the occasion comprised the Dean, Faculty of Science, Gombe State University,Dr.ElishaKaru and the representative of the NNPC-PPMC Depot in Gombe State, Ag. DM, Engr. U. D. Abdullahi.
NAPE team later paid a courtesy visit to the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Ibrahim Umar who welcomed the team pleasantly and offered his unreserved apology for not being able to attend the inauguration ceremony due to the University Council meeting that was in session at the same time. He thanked NAPE for finding the University worthy to have a Students’ Chapter. In his brief remarks, the President expressed his appreciation to the Vice Chancellor for the warm welcome and hospitality he and his team has enjoyed since they arrived the state. He pleaded with the Vice Chancellor to continue to support the Department of Geology so that they will continue to break new grounds. He requested from the Vice Chancellor for an immediate assistance to the Department for the provision of high-end desktop computers to enable the students prepare for the upcoming Basin Evaluation Competition (BEC) . The President promised to help the department with Petrel licences when the high-end computers are available.  The Vice Chancellor assured the team that the required computers will be made available to the Department. At the end of the visit, the President decorated the Vice Chancellor with the NAPE lapel and the Vice Chancellor invited the President to sign the visitor’s register. The team also visited the university zoo.
Several people and others too numerous to mention contributed in no small way to make the courtesy visit and inauguration ceremony memorable– the NAPE President, Dr. Andrew Ejayeriese, UAP Chairman, Dr. Adelola Adesida,  Abuja Chapter Coordinator, Mr. Ehi Bazuaye, Lawrence Osuagwu, Head, Technical & Educational Services, NAPE Secretariat, NAPE Membership Services,  Mrs. Nene Ahuoma, the Gombe State University Students’ Chapter Faculty Advisor, Mr. OlasehindeAdeyinka, Mr. Edwin Mbiimbe, the ever smiling university driver & security personnel who took the team to various parts of the beautiful town of Gombe. Gombe is indeed a Jewel in the Savannah.
