NAPE 31st Annual International Conference & Exhibitions

The Nigerian oil and gas industry has witnessed the largest number of divestment and acquisition activities, bringing new players to a risky business of oil and gas exploration and production. With assets changing hands, it is hoped that farmees will be able to drive a new wave of exploration activities in the Niger Delta. It is against this backdrop of events that NAPE decided on this year’s theme “Stimulating Exploration and Reserves Growth in a Maturing Basin”.

The conference took place at the Eko Hotels & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos from 10th-14th November, 2013. This was the first time the NAPE conference will be organized by a female President-Elect of the association, in the person of Mrs. Adedoja Ojelabi. The conference was preceded by six geoscience short courses and a field trip to the Eastern Dahomey Basin of South West Nigeria. The opening ceremony, technical sessions, workshops and other events were well attended. The Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Companies (OPEC) was represented by Dr. Taher Najah.

The exhibition was officially opened on Tuesday by the Vice President of ExxonMobil Production geoscience, Mr. Elijah White Jr. and OPEC representative, Dr. Taher Najah. Multinational companies like Shell, ExxonMobil, Chevron, Addax Petroleum Schlumberger and Baker Hughes set up booths and participated in the event. The exhibition floor was abuzz with activity throughout the conference and there was a lot of networking opportunity for students and professionals alike.

Technical sessions consisted of over 111 oral papers and 30 poster presentations. Technical sessions were held in relation to the conference theme, under the following five sub-themes:

  •     Seismic technologies and the development of new play concepts; rock physics models: characterization and prediction of rock properties from subsurface data.
  •     Reservoir Management strategies for sustained production and improved recovery.
  •     Technology application and exploitation of small accumulations.
  •     Policy initiatives for enhanced exploration and reserves growth.
  •     Contending and competing exploration technologies – how well and how far?
